Sanctuary for Yoga

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that we introduce our new look for Transform eNews. Over the last month, we have been developing this new layout with the fantastic team at Namaste Interactive. It is with deepest gratitude we thank them, particularly Chris and Hong, for their creativity and patience.

We love sharing the experience of yoga with you and hope you’ll enjoy some of the new offerings in the newsletter.

Namaste,

Sanctuary for Yoga

"When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. ~ Rumi"

With this new layout we would like to point out two features, Yoga Groove and Diving Deeper.

Yoga Groove is the dynamic pulse of Sanctuary. Here and on the website you will find information and news on workshops, events, and other great topics happening within the Sanctuary community.

Many students have been asking over the year and half Sanctuary has been open about yoga philosophy, yoga’s deeper history, and the spiritual aspects of the practice. So we are happy to introduce the Diving Deeper section, in the newsletter and on the website, to help answer some of these questions and give deeper insight into the practice of yoga.

In addition, Simon Park is back by popular demand, October 6 – 8. Dive into Simon’s living practice and experience a poetry of movement and breath that is energetic, creative, and fun. See the Simon Park highlight in the right-hand column.

Young Yogis Program
This past July, we introduced the Young Yogis program to rave reviews by the program attendees. For the four Thursdays in July, Tom hosted Wee Yogis (3-7 year olds) and Young Yogis (8-12 year olds) to fun and exciting yoga sessions designed to introduce yoga to our younger community.

Thank you to all the Wee and Young Yogis and parents who attended. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have had as much fun. To see some of the excitement and fun of the program, view our Young Yogis Photo Gallery.

BEYOND THE MAT

We are starting out with our “About Yoga” Series which will introduce elements of yoga, yoga philosophy, and history.

atha yoganusasanam
(Translation: With prayers of divine blessings, now begins an exposition on the sacred art of yoga.)

So what is yoga? Yoga stems from the Sanskrit word, yuj, which means “to yoke together” or “union” among several other definitions and can also refer to “spiritual endeavor”. According to Sri BKS Iyengar from his book Light on Yoga, “Yoga is one of six orthodox systems of Indian philosophy. It was collated, co-ordinated and systematized by Patanjali in his classical work, the Yoga Sutras, which consist of 185 terse aphorisms. In Indian thought, everything is permeated by the

Supreme Universal Spirit (Paramatma or God) of which the individual human spirit (jivatma) is a part. The system of yoga is so called because it teaches the means, by which the jivatma can be united to, or be in communion with. . . read more
